New lights look simple in the box. Getting them up is where people get stuck: cable ends that don't match the instructions, no earth at the old ceiling point, or an LED strip whose driver has to go somewhere. What's usually behind the old fitting
Take down an old light in a Cypriot flat and you'll often find two or three cable ends coming straight out of the concrete ceiling, joined with a plastic connector block. Older installations may use red and black wires instead of brown and blue, and some have no earth wire at all. None of that stops the new light going up, but the electrician needs to work out which wire is which, and a metal fitting with no earth is a problem worth fixing while they're there.
They'll switch off at the board, check the point is dead, then connect the new fitting with proper terminals rather than twisted wire and tape. Then they fix it to the ceiling, put the bulbs in and test it from every switch that controls it.
Fittings that need more than three wires
- Ceiling fans with a light: ideally the fan and light get separate control, which may mean an extra wire from the switch.
- LED strips: the driver (the small power box) has to sit somewhere you can get at later and where it can breathe. Burying it in plaster or a sealed cabinet shortens its life.
- Motion-sensor outdoor lights: these need power all the time, so a wall switch in front of them can cause confusion.
- Smart or remote-control fittings: some need the wall switch left on permanently to work.
Getting the fittings ready
Unpack everything before the visit and check nothing is missing, especially small fixing screws and canopy parts. Have the bulbs ready if they're not included. Know which switch controls which point, and if you're putting a fitting somewhere there's no point yet, say so in the booking, as that's a new cable run rather than a swap. Clear furniture from under each light so a ladder can stand flat.
