Σχετικά με την υπηρεσία

The fuse box, or consumer unit, is the control centre of your electrical installation. Every circuit in the house starts there, and the devices inside it are what disconnect the power when something goes wrong. In many older Cyprus homes the original board was installed when a house had a fridge, a few lights and perhaps one water heater. Today the same board may be feeding several air conditioners, an induction hob, a pool pump and an electric car charger.

Installing a new fuse box is a job for a suitably qualified electrician. Through FixNow you can describe your property, share photos of the existing board and receive offers from local electricians, then choose the one you are most comfortable with.

Reasons to install a new fuse box

  • Old rewireable fuses: ceramic fuse carriers instead of modern circuit breakers.
  • No RCD protection: no residual current device to cut power in the event of an earth fault.
  • No spare ways: no room to add circuits for new appliances or an extension.
  • Renovation or rewire: a major project is the natural time to upgrade.
  • Signs of wear: discoloured plastic, cracked casing or an unlabelled jumble of wires.

Choosing what goes inside

A modern board can be configured in different ways. Some homes use one or two RCDs protecting groups of circuits, while others use RCBOs, which combine overload and earth fault protection for each circuit individually so a fault on one circuit does not take out half the house. Surge protection is worth discussing too, especially in areas where storms or supply fluctuations are common. A metal enclosure, sensible circuit labelling and a few spare ways for future additions round off a good installation.

Ask the electricians who send offers to explain the arrangement they propose, the brand of devices, and which tests they will carry out on completion. Their answers say a lot about the quality of the work.

What the installation involves

The electrician isolates the supply, removes the old board, mounts and wires the new consumer unit, and reconnects each circuit to its own protective device. Faults hidden by the old board, such as poor earthing or damaged cables, often show up during testing and may need fixing before everything can be switched back on. Expect the power to be off for a good part of the day, so plan around the fridge and freezer.

Factors that affect cost

  • Board size: the number of circuits and spare ways required.
  • Protection type: RCDs, RCBOs and surge protection devices.
  • Condition of wiring: remedial work found during testing.
  • Location: moving the board to a new position adds time.
  • Single or three-phase: larger properties may have a three-phase supply.

Συχνές ερωτήσεις

How do I know if my fuse box needs replacing?
Warning signs include rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers, no RCD, a cracked or scorched casing, frequent tripping with no obvious cause, and no space for new circuits. A board installed decades ago may simply not be suited to modern loads. An electrician can assess yours from photos and an inspection.
What is the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?
An RCD monitors for current leaking to earth and switches off a group of circuits if it detects a fault, protecting against electric shock. An RCBO does the same job plus overload protection, but for a single circuit, so a fault only affects that circuit. Many modern boards use RCBOs for convenience.
How long will the power be off?
Replacing a typical household fuse box usually takes most of a working day, during which the supply is off for long periods. Larger boards, three-phase supplies or faults uncovered during testing can extend this. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed, charge devices beforehand and agree timing with your electrician.
Will a new fuse box stop my breakers tripping?
Not always. A new board makes the installation safer, but if a circuit has a genuine fault, such as damaged cable or a faulty appliance, the new devices will still trip, as they should. Your electrician will test each circuit and can trace and repair any faults found.
Can I replace a fuse box myself?
No. Working on a consumer unit means handling conductors connected to the incoming supply, and mistakes can be fatal or create hidden fire risks. Fuse box installation should always be carried out by a suitably qualified electrician who can test the installation properly afterwards.
