Getting into a property usually means passing several points: the pedestrian gate, the car gate, the front door, and in flats a shared building entrance. Each of these can take a keypad, fob reader, intercom or smart lock. A local installer works out what suits each door and gate, wires it in and sets up the codes and app with you before leaving.

Choosing what goes on each entrance
- Pedestrian gate: an electric lock or magnetic lock released by a keypad, a fob or the intercom inside the house.
- Car gate: usually controlled by the gate motor, with a keypad on a post, remote controls or a phone app added to it.
- Front door: a smart lock that replaces or fits over the existing cylinder, opened by code, phone, fingerprint or card.
- Apartment block entrance: a multi-button intercom panel, sometimes with a fob reader for residents.
Doors and locks in Cypriot homes
A lot of front doors here are aluminium, or steel security doors with multi-point locks. Aluminium frames are often narrow, which limits where an electric strike can be cut in, and some security doors need a smart lock made for their specific cylinder. Before choosing a lock, measure the door thickness and note the cylinder type, which is usually the euro-profile shape. Magnetic locks hold strongly but need a solid frame to mount on, and the door has to close properly every time or it won't lock.
Gates are a separate story. Metal gates swell and move with the heat, so a lock that's aligned in January may catch in August. A good installer leaves a little adjustment in the strike.
Wiring and setting it up
The gate is usually some distance from the house, and the cable for an intercom or keypad needs a route back, often through a duct under the garden or driveway. If there's no duct, ask early, because adding one is easier before landscaping than after. Wi-Fi often doesn't reach the gate properly either, so a wired link or an outdoor access point may be needed for app control.
At handover, make sure the administrator account is in your name, the default codes have been changed, and you have a written list of who has which fob or code. Keep the mechanical key somewhere you can actually find it.
